The American Flag symbolizes many things; it symbolizes our freedom, our dignity, the true meaning of being an American, and many more things. It has fought our country's wars, cried our country's cries, and laughed our country's happiness. It has been with us through our war times, our sad times, but mostly our joyful times. The flag has gone through many transactions and changes before it came to be the flag we all know and love. Actually it took a very long time, from January 1, 1776, till August 21, 1960. There has been a mystery about who designed the first flag, after all this time.
Elizabeth Griscom Ross first was a seamstress Then, when her husband died in 1776, she had to carry on the upholstery shop that her husband had run when he was an upholster. She lived near by the State House, where history took its place. She often mended George Washington's clothing, and they were good friends. The legend has it that one day around June in 1776, Washington and two other important figures of history ask Ms. Ross to sow the flag that they sketched out, Washington knew her talent with a needle and thread. Ms. Ross is to have changed the original six point stars to five. May 1776 was when she was recognized for sowing the first American flag. She was proven to have sown the flag, but some still wonder if she actually designed it.
Another person who has been mentioned to have designed the flag was Francis Hopkinson, he was a popular patriot, a lawyer, a Congressman for New Jersey, poet, artist, signer of the Declaration of Independence, and a civil servant, a man with many professions. He had wrote a letter to the Board of Admiralty in 1780 saying that he was the one who had designed the first flag. Most say that he did, and other sources believe that too, but no one will ever really know.
